Slickest in the Southwest – Breeze
Who are you?
I go by Breeze or Brez
Where are you based?
I was born and raised in Phoenix by way of the Salt River community just outside of town.
What is your background as an artist?
I was always into art as a kid but I started writing graffiti in 1993, which changed everything. I attended grade school and middle school right behind the PIMC (Phoenix Indian Medical Center) on 16th St and Indian School.
Right around 1995 I met a couple different groups of graffiti writers/artists whom I still call my friends today. Their influence and energy back then molded me into the writer I was in the mid to late 90’s and early 2000’s, as well as the artist I’ve become now.
Between 2002 and 2004, I moved away from Arizona living on the east coast and took a small hiatus from art in general. In 2005 I came back but the graffiti world in Phoenix had changed with new jacks and unfamiliar faces, along with the redundancy of graf politics.
I found myself searching for new outlets with art and began the pursuit of art as a career by works on canvas. Eventually the small scale canvas works weren’t enough and the large scale painting that comes with letters naturally evolved into mural pieces and other wall art projects that were no longer graffiti but a natural step in growth.
My styles became more intricate and abstract than they already were, completely losing any actually lettering, while maintaining the idea of everything connected together through balance (beauty and chaos).
Large scale wall/mural projects are a main focus now, but I will never lose my love for graffiti…and when I say Graffiti…I mean GRAFFITI…not ‘street art’.
I’m always most appreciative of my upbringing and teachings from my grandparents and other elders, as well as all around cultural values and consciousness that transcends from Indigenous views.
I am also thankful for my friends whom I knew as a teenager and still call my friends today…. Stoec, Base (RIP), Kaper, Pez, El Mac, Fyse, Deny, Page, Mover and many others.
How would you explain your creations in 4 words?
Human conscious creative intellect.
Where does your vision come from & what do you hope to accomplish?
Visions come from influences and experiences of everyday life.
Life on this plain is extremely interesting and potent with knowledge and mystery.
We spend our lives building and deciphering the way the world works.
In the end there is always a balance to find. It’s a rollercoaster and sometimes we have to roll with the punches, but it adds layers to our lives.
When you were young, did you ever imagine your work would inspire & motivate so many people?
Never thought about it as a kid, and don’t think much on it now I guess.
In the end it’s not about me, and I hope we all equally continue to find inspiration and motivation in all things beyond human perception…and are able to find some small measure of comprehension to the mysterious circle we call life.
Could you please give our viewers some information about where they can see/purchase your work?
