You Can Never Go Home Again by John Alexander

YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN
Thomas Wolfe once said “you can never go home again.” With this said, we take a look at Against Me!, a band that just recently walked away from a major label. With that new found freedom comes a tour of underground venues all across the U.S. of A.
What’s the connection to Thomas Wolfe, you may ask?
Well, the famous book written in in late 1940s was about a writer who left the life in a small town for greener pastures, only to go back and realize that nothing is the same.
A band once honored in the underground, Against Me! left to sign with a major label (only to get dropped 4 years later) are now revisiting their old stomping grounds. On January 28th they made their stop at The Nile Theatre in Mesa, Az.
The venue, where the bar happens to be in your own trunk, seemed to be comprised of confused emo kids, who found solace through honesty; aging scenesters reminiscing their golden days; and the weirdos who got kicked out of Casey Moore’s.
But all are waiting…
Through the tragic opening acts…
Waiting for the appearance of 4 assholes brought together by one common thing: a shared distaste for the rest of the world.
Their set was predictable.
The opener was “Pints of Guinness Makes You Strong,” followed by “From Her Lips to Gods Ears” with staple songs from each album thrown in between. From Reinventing Axl Rose to New Wave – and in typical Against Me! fashion – White Crosses. For Tom once said, during the Eternal Cowboy tour, “one day you will say “please play something from the Eternal Cowboy and each album proceeding.””
So all in all… Against Me! is a band that can only be judged live, as a headliner; one that no festival or ‘opener show’ can compare. Their music has evolved from Billy Braggs to Bruce Springsteen…
But it’s the way the songs are played live that will never change.
You may never go home again, but that’s just life on the road.
